Deutsche Schmalspurbahnen

As a result of the decision in 1975 by the GDR (East German Government) to accord the status of National Technical Monuments to their narrow gauge railways, they survived through the reunification of Germany into the 21st century.  Some still provide a public transport service to residents and in the case of the Harz system also carry freight, others have become heritage railways operated by amateur groups.
